Popeye Doll from 1950s

This is a Popeye doll with unconventional clothing which was made in the 1950s. The doll is made of rubber and straw stuffing held together by Popeye's signature striped top. The toy shows Popeye as featured in the original cartoon and programming which peaked in popularity during WW2.

Popeye is a 34 year old sailor with an obsession with the super food spinach. In fact, because of it being used for his strength in the cartoon, spinach sales went up by 33% in 1932. The cartoon showed the rivalry between Bluto and Popeye as well as Popeye's complete love for Olive Oyl.

Popeye was first featured in the comic strip 'Thimble Theatre' later to be called 'Popeye'. He rose rapidly in popularity alongside Olive Oyl and Bluto. Due to his popularity when hitting the screens in 1932, memorabilia was a very popular item for children in the 1950s and this doll would have been mass produced.
